3 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Home

|

Valentine’s Day is probably one of, if not the most, annoying holidays of the year. Personally, I loathed Valentine’s Day. Especially during highschool when everyone was dating someone left and right. Then when I actually had my first long-term relationship in 9th grade, I was stressed out for Valentine’s Day. The thing is… This holiday is a Hallmark holiday that many people think is only meant for couples and honestly, that has to change.

On Tamrah Lane, we are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day as, dare I say, Spread the Love Day. Now, I am not trying to “relabel” Valentine’s Day. I’m simply asking that we change the way we view this holiday. So for today’s blog, we are focusing on celebrating Valentine’s Day with whoever you want to spend. Heck, you can enjoy all these things by yourself!

Valentine’s Day the Old School Way – Letters

I am a sentimental person. I love nostalgic keepsakes, looking through old photographs, and watching home videos. The one thing I especially love is crafting and writing my own letters. You heard that right, crafting letters – construction paper, markers, water color, and origami even. And honestly, more people need to do this! I know it’s easy to go to the store and find a card, but there is something special about receiving something handmade.

So here are easy Valentine’s Day letter ideas for my crafty ones:

Watercolor Letters

Claudia Carmen Design on YouTube

To make watercolor cards, you will need watercolor painting paper, watercolor paints, paintbrushes, and water (obviously). You can also use markers, I highly recommend fine-point markers for fine detailing and writing.

The tutorial linked above is just one amazing YouTuber who has watercolor tutorials. There is a whole watercoloring community to explore and don’t fret if they look too intricate! These designs are actually a lot easier than you think.

Lastly, do not use regular paper from your printer. You will end up with a soggy piece of paper. So make sure you use watercolor painting paper!

Origami Heart Notes

Summer Scott on YouTube

I cannot tell you how many of these I made that it’s almost embarassing. But they are just so cute and easy! What I love about these heart notes is that they can be casual or amped up simply depending on the paper you use. I also love how many you can easily make. So why not make some for your whole family, friends, and maybe even your neighbors?

All you need for these cards are paper and something to write with.

Heart Envelope

So you made your letters, but what do you put them in? A heart envelope, obviously. For this DIY, all you need is colored A4 paper.

Tip: If you can, slide in a printed photo of you and the recipient! If you don’t quite know how to do that, check out the HP Sprocket that we featured in our 15 Gifts For Photographers, Videographers, And “Phonetographers” – 2020 Christmas Gift Guide.

Write a Letter to Your Future Self

Now, this is not exactly handwritten, but instead a love letter to your future self using our good ol’ friend technology. Head over to futureme.org and get to writing a letter to your future self. Don’t worry, it’s 100% free.

Matching PJs, Munchies, and Movies

Again, you can enjoy some if not all these activities by yourself and this is definitely one of them. Although, I am not sure who you can match PJs with… Moving on.

Comfy PJs is Key

Matching clothes is fun, especially when you have activities planned out to match the outfits. For Valentine’s Day, keep it cozy with matching PJs!

I am a big fan of Mattari Wear and currently own 2 sets of their PJs. This Valentine’s Day, I bought matching PJs for Mike and I. Now, I know these seem to be marketed towards women, but it’s 2021 and gender doesn’t dictate what you can and cannot wear. Mattari Wear also has a Valentine’s Day promo going on! So definitely head over and check Mattari Wear out.

Oh, and don’t forget to take a photoshoot with your cute matching PJs.

Other side note: I highly recommend sizing up one if you like your PJs to be breezy and flowy.

Sweet, Savory, and Spicy Munchies

Not everything on Valentine’s Day has to be sweet. Gather a bunch of sweet, savory and spicy munchies to enjoy during your snuggly movie night. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Sweet Snacks

  • Dark chocolate covered almonds
  • Caramel popcorn
  • Rice Krispies
  • Chocolate fondue
  • Turon (Filipino fried banana rolls)
  • Pocky or Pepero
  • Chocnut

Savory Snacks

Spicy Snacks

  • Sriracha Peas
  • Wasabi Peas
  • Flamin’ Hot Cheetos (yes, I said it)
  • Hot & Spicy Shrimp Crackers
  • Takis

Movies for Valentine’s Day

Anything. You can literally watch anything on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t even have to be a movie! You could binge watch one of your favorite shows or movie series. Maybe laugh along to a standup special on Netflix.

Take it up a notch and play a movie drinking game, which you probably shouldn’t play by yourself.

Host a Watch Party with Your Valentine(s)

Now, if you want to involve your entire friend group but still want to socially distance, host a watch party on Discord or Zoom!

You can even make it a themed event. For example, if you choose to watch Mean Girls together, everyone must dress up in pink. Just don’t ban carbs or else no one will be happy.

Turn Up on Valentine’s Day

The good thing about quarantine is that it’s now more socially acceptable to get drunk at home. At least, that’s what I think.

Learn How to Make Cocktails

Epicurious on YouTube

Epicurious is one of my favorite YouTube channels and they have a bunch of educational videos with one of them being cocktail making! Order a cocktail set on Amazon like this one, go to your nearest liquor store, play this video at home, and learn how to make cocktails!

You can even make this into an online event with your friends and family via Zoom, Discord, or wherever you do your video calls.

Spiked Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate!

During the cold season, my go to drink is hot chocolate. It’s so comforting and delicious. Sometimes, if I want to get a little litty, I’ll spike it with some Bailey’s Irish Cream. Oh yes, Bailey’s.

Of course, you can spike any drink – lattes, horchata, coffee, or eggnog to name a few.

Final Thoughts on Celebrating Valentine’s Day in Quarantine

Whatever it is you decide to do for Valentine’s Day, remember to stay safe! The pandemic is far from over. I know it’s tempting to celebrate to see your loved ones, but that’s why they invented things like Zoom, right?

Of course, remember that this day is not a day just for couples! Valentine’s Day is just another reminder to not take your loved ones for granted and to show them you are thinking about them.

In other words… Have a happy “Spread the Love” Day from us at Tamrah Lane!
